In 2010, Prosound completed the design, supply, installation and commissioning of the complete public address and evacuation system for KwaZulu-Natal’s new multi-billion Rand King Shaka International Airport.
The fully-integrated solution, which services all public and back-of-house areas, needed to meet and exceed the standards of the world’s best airports.
Airport sound systems come with a unique set of challenges, having to offer clear and articulate voice quality in often chaotic front-of-house areas. The sound in the behind-the-scenes areas, like the basements and offices, also needs to feature high levels of intelligibility, easily heard over the ambient noise.
From design to commissioning, the entire project took almost two and half years. A number of obstacles were confronted along the way, most notably constant changes to the architectural plans, which meant that Prosound kept a team permanently on site for the duration of the project. The final product was a uniquely integrated system, easily on par with the world’s most celebrated airports.
