Towards the end of 2005, Prosound was awarded a contract by Gold Reef City to provide them with an upgrade to the existing audio system at the casino in the south of Johannesburg. The first phase was the replacement of the old analogue processing gear with the Peavey Media Matrix NION 3 DSP unit – with the results achieved by integrating the NION 3 being a huge improvement in the over-all sound quality in the casino.

The NION 3 is a programmable digital audio processing node designed for professional and commercial audio and communications applications. The internal processing core is supported by a wide range of features including Media Matrix’s Scalable I/O Architecture, a modular I/O scheme that supports a variety of optional plug-in cards for maximum versatility. Four module bays support up to 32 simultaneous analog audio channels while the integrated Cobra Net port provides another 64 channels, for a total of 96 simultaneous configurable audio channels. The next ‘phase’ was the promotions stage at the centre core of the casino.

Previously Gold Reef City used to hire in a sound and lighting system to supply audio and visual back-up to the promotion stage. Prosound supplied a front-of-house system consisting of the Electro-Voice RX115 loudspeaker systems supplemented by the Electro-Voice RX215 sub-bass loudspeakers. The loudspeakers are powered by Crest Audio amplifiers, and all processing is achieved through another Media Matrix control system.
